Three feet of width is what makes it a banqueting table rather than a functional one: it carries full place settings down both sides and still leaves a genuine centre channel for a runner, candles, florals and glassware. On a 2ft table those compete for the same space. Two setups account for most bookings. Head tables, where a long dressed table seats the couple, the family or the panel facing the room — 8ft gives enough length for a meaningful top table without needing several joined.
